Westinghouse’s TX-42F450S 42-inch LCD

Westinghouse apparently missed the memo that the holiday shopping season is over. Unless it considers Valentine’s Day more of a guy’s holiday (hey, if you’re gonna give diamonds, maybe you’ll get an LCD).

The company has unveiled its new affordable, full high-def resolution LCD TV—the 42-inch TX-42F450S the features, among other things, a tidy $699 MSRP.

We know you might be thinking without the Sharp, Sony or other major label it’s more cubic zirconia but the specs have this 42-inch set looking like a diamond in the rough if you’re in the market for a budget-friendly TV.

Features include:

  • 1080Pure technology and four HDMI connectors
  • 1000:1 contrast ratio
  • 176-degree viewing angle
  • 8-ms response time
  • Preset and custom video modes

And of course there’s that sub-$700 pricing spec, too, if you’re into that whole saving money thing. We’d say keep ‘em coming, Westinghouse!

Samsung has put out another top notch product with this new series of Televisions. The Samsung LN46A750 46-Inch 1080p DLNA LCD HDTV with RED Touch of Color blows past other top name brands of High Definition Televisions. This High Definition Television from Samsung has top quality contrast, colors, and a great motion response for all of the high action television that you plan to watch. You can watch sports, action movies and any other fast moving programs in top quality HD without losing any quality along the way. Auto Motion Plus 120Hz and Ultra Clear Panel technology work together to offer the smoothest motion and boldest bright and dark tones of any High Definition television on the market.

If you are looking for extras that other new Television models may not offer, than this Samsung model may be what you are looking for. Something that I have not found in any other HDTV is a library of pre loaded HD content, including cooking, fitness, children’s entertainment, and even a photo gallery for your viewing pleasure that Samsung is now offering.

With most HDTV’s, analog television channels are terrible and often look terribly fuzzy. The  Samsung LN46A750 still leaves these channels looking fuzzier than the HD channels, but it does a great job at dealing with this. The picture quality itself is fantastic and looks very natural right at the factory settings. Its 50 000:1 is a definite plus. If you are used to watching HDTVs, you can tweak them easily.
The Samsung LN46A750 also offers great connectivity like most the other Samsung models do as well. You can hook just about anything you can think of to your new Television, from hookups for video game consoles to Ethernet ports to stay connected to your home network via the DLNA networking feature. There is an Info Link feature that will provide an RSS feed with up to date web content from USA Today.
When comparing the different series, we found that this model has a better refresher rate and response time than the 550 model that makes it well worth the extra cost. We also noticed very little LCD motion blur that is common with these TV sets. It also has the DNLA that gives it a real edge over other models and brands. This combined with the wireless and wired Ethernet makes using your PC with the computer a breeze.

Producing a well-contrasted picture is perhaps the most important task any television can tackle, and the Samsung LN52A750 ($3,999.99 list) delivered the best contrast results we’ve encountered in an LCD HDTV. This 52-inch set’s out-of-the-box color quality was outstanding, and it handled standard and high-definition video well by preserving fine detail while minimizing distracting image artifacts. Throw in a useful selection of network-enabled multimedia features and an excellent set of picture controls, and the LN52A750 adds up to one of the most capable TVs we’ve seen.

The set’s black-bezel design embeds a thin strip of dark red-amber color along its transparent outer edge, which is hard to notice unless you’re up close; still, it’s quite attractive. The remote control features rounded edges for a more comfortable grip, and its keypad has enlarged, clearly labeled, fully backlit buttons.

Most of the audio and video ports are located near the lower right-hand corner on the back of the chassis. This outward-facing panel includes three HDMI ports, two component video inputs, and a VGA port. Also included is an RF input for tuning analog or digital terrestrial broadcasts (NTSC and ATSC), as well as unscrambled digital cable signals (QAM). Front-accessible ports on the left-hand side of the set include an additional HDMI port and a USB port for accessing multimedia content like pictures, music, and video files stored on removable media.

With a sprawling 52-inch screen displaying full 1080p resolution (1,920 by 1,080 pixels progressively scanned), the LCD features a clear surface filter, which Samsung claims improves contrast and color fidelity by deepening video black.

Samsung has what you are looking for when it comes to high definition televisions and the Samsung LN40A650 40-Inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV with RED Touch of Color should be at the top of your list when searching for the High definition TV you want. Samsung has improved their top of the line High definition models with every new model they have put out and the a650 series is no different.

This LN40A650 40-Inch television adds the Red Touch of Color to a blazing fast 4ms response time which makes for a great television viewing experience. With such a fast response time, high speed motion like in sports, auto racing and even action movies really come to life as the Televisions these days can actually keep up with the fast moving pace. The 120 Hz also keeps the picture transition as smooth and quick as possible to keep your television picture looking great. The contrast and color of this HDTV model is unreal with a 50,000 to 1 dynamic contrast ratio which is over double from the models that where put out in past years.

This Samsung and most of the Samsung High definition television models have great connectivity which allows you to connect video game consoles, DVD players, blue ray players, camcorders, and even your laptop. It offers you many different ports so that you can have just about anything you want connected all at one time for ease of use. Samsung LN32A450 32-Inch 720p LCD HDTV is a great TV for a small wallet here is a great review of this TV:

Motion Response First, and most important, is response time with fast motion. I am driven absolutely nuts if the TV can’t “hold” the motion (that is, if the image smears, or fractures, when high speed elements are zooming across the screen). The element you are looking for in an LCD monitor that tells you about this is “response time”, and you want something 8ms or below. This TV “holds” the motion of even fast images extremely well. In the store, it held motion best of all comparably priced models, including the Sony Bravias around $1k, and the Sharps around the same price. When I got it home, I tested it out with Star Wars ep. 1 and the battle sequence from Narnia. Both looked outstanding using a regular DVD player with HDMI up convert to 720p. You will not see ghosting issues with high def images.

Color and contrast Color fidelity and contrast are also important to me, and LCDs have been known to have issues producing deep blacks and bright whites. This is not a problem for this set. It produces excellent color, and did so right out of the box with the factory pre-sets. I have not had to fiddle with it at all. I did try switching to “Cinema” mode, which has some nice characteristics, but even without that, everything looked amazing.

Standard Def-rendition Another major issue with LCD TVs and monitors is that anything not displayed at the native resolution tends to look blurred or “fractured”. I was very concerned about this because I have lots of old DVDs of shows like Seinfeld and the Simpsons, which I know were never broadcast in HD. Also many TV stations have not yet made the switch (though most have). Here the TV was about as good as I have seen, though it is not perfect. The good news is that up converted SD sources like the Seinfeld DVDs look excellent — every bit as good as on a regular TV, if not better. The bad news is that your VHS tapes are going to look blurry and pixelated on a set like this. I don’t have a lot of VHS tapes left, and so this isn’t a huge deal. Regular SD sources with this set vary in quality. For example, the SD version of Animal Planet had a special on the other night that almost looked HD. At the same time, flip channels to CNN, and it looks terrible. I suspect this is the broadcast quality and NOT the set… otherwise all channels would look awful in SD. So when you get a nice SD source being broadcast, it looks fine.

I would highly recommend this set. After connecting my HD cable box today and watching things like CSI:Miami, Vegas, and Miss Congeniality, all in widescreen HD, I can say that I am totally blown away by this set’s HD performance. I don’t think you’ll be able to find a better HD TV set for the price.”

Here are the pros and cons of this TV:

Pros: Outstanding, crisp HD picture; excellent color contrast; solid response time Cons: Slight pixelation with poor quality SD signal

Samsung’s 550 Series is a perfect way to step up to Full HD 1080p resolution. A fast 5 ms response rate produces smooth-motion scenes for sports and action movies, and a dynamic contrast ratio of 30,000:1 makes for deep blacks and crisp lines (15,000:1 in 32-inch and 37-inch models).  Superb connectivity and networking with a USB port and 3 HDMI 1.3 ports with Consumer Electronics Control (CEC) means these HDTVs play well with all of your other electronics. Easily enjoy MPEG and JPEG files stored on external devices by connecting through the side-mounted USB 2.0, turn your LCD into a full-scale home viewing gallery, or connect your MP3 player for a dynamic audio experience.

With standard-definition TVs, the rule used to be that viewers would feel comfortable watching a set from a distance of 3 to 6 times the screen size in inches. With HDTV, the resolution is so much better that you can sit closer to a larger TV without noticing the pixels. So with HDTVs, the rule tends to be you can sit anywhere from 1.5 to 3 times the screen size (in inches) for the best experience. If you know the size of the room you have already, where you want to sit, and where your new HDTV should go once you get it, you can figure out the size HDTV you should get. Minimum size = Viewing distance/3 Maximum size=Viewing distance/1.5

I found the Samsung LN40A550 40-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV to be a great deal with its sleek design, excellent quality, and great price. It certainly isn’t perfect, but it is definitely one of the best at the price point. If you are considering a larger TV, keep in mind that this TV looks even larger than it does in the store.

The 30 000 contrast ratio with the 1080p gives this set a sharp, clear picture with excellent color. Like other HDTV’s the standard channels don’t do the TV justice. When you add Blue Ray and a good quality HDMI, it outperforms many of the more expensive brands. It’s 5mhz refresh rate makes it perfectly suitable for movies, games, and sports. This Samsung LN40A550 even works well in bright rooms. This is partly due to a screen that is half way between a matte and a glossy screen. Its 60Hz is almost as good as the 120Hz available for a price that is considerably higher.

There are a couple of small things that could certainly be improved. The sound of the speakers is not the greatest, but very few TV’s have great speakers and most people connect them to a sound system anyway. The remote is a bit finicky, but so long as you put your television in a good spot in the room, this shouldn’t enter into the equation. One bonus for the remote is that it is comfortable, easy to use, and lights up. These minor cons of the product really don’t enter into the picture when you see the real quality of the picture.
