I found the Samsung LN40A550 40-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV to be a great deal with its sleek design, excellent quality, and great price. It certainly isn’t perfect, but it is definitely one of the best at the price point. If you are considering a larger TV, keep in mind that this TV looks even larger than it does in the store.
The 30 000 contrast ratio with the 1080p gives this set a sharp, clear picture with excellent color. Like other HDTV’s the standard channels don’t do the TV justice. When you add Blue Ray and a good quality HDMI, it outperforms many of the more expensive brands. It’s 5mhz refresh rate makes it perfectly suitable for movies, games, and sports. This Samsung LN40A550 even works well in bright rooms. This is partly due to a screen that is half way between a matte and a glossy screen. Its 60Hz is almost as good as the 120Hz available for a price that is considerably higher.
There are a couple of small things that could certainly be improved. The sound of the speakers is not the greatest, but very few TV’s have great speakers and most people connect them to a sound system anyway. The remote is a bit finicky, but so long as you put your television in a good spot in the room, this shouldn’t enter into the equation. One bonus for the remote is that it is comfortable, easy to use, and lights up. These minor cons of the product really don’t enter into the picture when you see the real quality of the picture.
